San Mateo County

Over the hills from the developed bayside that is south of San Francisco, people seeking quiet beaches and small towns will find the San Mateo coast alluring. North County towns such as Pacifica are bracketed by the ocean and protected by hills, while Half Moon Bay clings to a rural character. Further south, open space and State Beaches abound. Pescadero Marsh, Aņo Nuevo State Reserve (home to a large elephant seal colony), and Bean Hollow and Pomponio State Beaches are a few of the natural attractions. The CCT provides hiking in many areas, and in coming years, new segments will be completed on recently acquired public land. [Richard Nichols]
