We spotlight what is going on up and down the California Coast to complete the CCT, to provide public access and recreation, and to protect the coastal environment. We invite coastal trails and open-space organizations to submit their news as well.
Read here about current progress in posting signs marking the CCT, up and down the state.
Completing the California Coastal Trail Report--two years in the making--released by the State Coastal Conservancy! The 60-page report, mandated by SB 908 of 2001, sets objectives, lists priorities, provides maps and estimates costs for the completion of the CCT by 2008. Coastwalk played an important role in the report's generation with the Conservancy, Coastal Commission and California State Parks. Read a synopsis or download the report as a PDF file on this web site; or obtain a copy from the Coastal Conservancy by e-mail to coastaltrail@scc.ca.gov .

Planners remove coastal access from Diablo project. In a 3-0 vote, with two members absent, the [San Luis Obispo County planning] commission removed requirements to enhance public access to the coast around the plant as a condition for building the waste facility. Planning staff proposed requiring the utility to pay $12 million for improved coastal access at Port San Luis and guarantee further coastal access after the plant closes in 20 to 40 years. David Weisman of Morro Bay, representing the San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, said the group will appeal the decision to the Board of Supervisors and eventually to the state Coastal Commission. Global Warming--coastal planners and advocates need to be aware. This century will see a 1-3 foot increase in the ocean's height. This will affect the coastal landscape, wetlands and habitat, structures, parks and trails, and even our water supply. These factors are all considered in the Autumn 2003 issue of Coast & Ocean Magazine, the second issue of the magazine--the first was in 1989--entirely dedicated to this problem. The issue, guest-edited by Gordy Slack, includes articles by Slack, Seth Zukerman, Susan Davis, Anne Canright, and an insightful editorial by Raza Gustaitis.
